ONE HOUR DECATHLON

In short, it's a decathlon that you do in an hour. It's a fun event, not an official event, so some typical rules don't apply. First a little background:

The Decathlon has these events in this order:
Day 1 - 100 Meters, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, 400 Meters
Day 2 - High Hurdles, Discus, Pole Vault, Javelin, 1500 Meters

Athletes score points in each of the 10 events. The better the performance, the more points the athlete receives. Age grading occurs for athletes that are not in the Open division. For example, an athlete whose age is 13 or 63 may run a 14 second 100 meter race. Their mark will be age-graded and they will receive MORE points than the Open athlete that ran the 100 meters in 14 seconds.

The Open division Men run 110 Meter High Hurdles over 42" hurdles.
The Open division Women run 100 Meter High Hurdles over 33" hurdles.
Youth and Master divisions run different distances with different hurdle heights and other specifications. The throwing implements vary by gender & division, too.

So how does the One Hour Decathlon differ?

EVENTSTART: A clock will be started when the first event (100 Meters) begins. The last event (1500 meters) must be STARTED (not finished) within 1 hour of the EVENTSTART. The same order of events will be followed, but you can choose not to do an event. That's right, you can just skip an event and receive 0 (ZERO) points in that event.

Athletes decide how much to warm up and how many attempts to take in an event. (Maximum 3 measured throws or long jumps).

Athletes may start the first event together (the 100M), and then go to the next event (Long Jump). Some athletes may choose to jump once, and then go to the next event, while others may want a few practice jumps, and then take 3 jumps which will be measured. So it's possible that an athlete may take one long jump, go to the shot put and take one throw, go to the high jump and clear one height, etcetera.
TIPS to know BEFORE the meet:
  • Where do you start on the runway for the long jump/high jump/pole vault/javelin?
  • Are your poles and implements ready?
  • Know how and where to set up your blocks (if you're using them)
  • Know which shoes/spikes you'll be using for each event
  • Plan to recover 10 minutes after the 400 meters
  • Bring recovery drinks and snacks
    Implements and Hurdles:
  • *Men Hurdles will run 110 meters over 10 x 33" hurdles
  • *Women Hurdles will run 100 meters over 10 x 30" hurdles
